$20 vs $7
In keeping with my theme of cheap implements, here is some info on cheap whips. What can you buy for $20 versus $7? I bought a whip for around $20 at a local tack shop to see what it was like. It was a stock whip with a long wooden handle, but I converted it into a small hand held sized whip. I did it mostly so I could get the feel of a whip, and for a fun little toy of intimidation. I am saving up for a more expensive single-tail whip, and when I find just the right one, I’ll fork over the money, but nice single-tail whips are very expensive. These are very cheap. I’m a little embarrassed to show you something I have handmade, but I will do it anyway. Here is the one I made from the signal whip. (click on the pic to enlarge it) <-- I wish everything worked like that

Not long after I made the $20 whip into a smaller whip, a friend of mine told me about a tack shop in Texas that sells small bullwhips for $7, so I purchased one. Here is the $7 bullwhip. Sorry it’s white and doesn’t show up as well. See if you notice a difference. Something more expensive isn’t always better.

A couple more shots for comparison:

Then on a whim about a month or two ago I ordered a quirt for about $20 from Blue Ridge Leather. It was a nice quirt, but I went ahead and bought a second quirt for $7 from the store in Texas where I got the small bullwhip, mostly because shipping for one item was the same as shipping for two items. Can you tell which quirt cost me $20 and which one cost me $7? I’m labeling them quirt A and quirt B. Let’s see if you can tell which one is which.

Quirt A:

Quirt B:

Quirts A and B:

Now if you want to feel the difference, you'll have to come see me so that I can arrange a more tactile experience for you. *wicked laughter* In the meantime use your imagination and after I test them out on my next victim, I'll let you know which one hurts more.

Happy Halloween Tomorrow!!

Okay ... I'll take a guess that quirt A is the more expensive one and quirt B is the one from TX.

And, if I ever decide to come visit you, remind me to check your mood BEFORE I come. :-)

mac2,
Yep, you were right Quirt A is the more expensive one. I've had it longer and have been softening the leather on it longer, and I think it shows. Hey, I would never hurt you unless you wanted me to! :)

Sarah,
I own some floggers! :) Yes, floggers are nice. That quirt can be light and stingy or wicked, it's versatile. I don't know if I'll ever use the whips on anyone, that was sort of a side hobby for me.

I'd offer a guess on which quirt was which, but I'd be cheating. They look remarkably similar, don't they? If there's a big difference in quality, I can't detect it in the photos.

As to the whips, I'm intrigued and confused by what you did to the one you modified. It sounds like, at the very least, you took off the wood handle -- but where did the leather wrist loop come from, if a handle used to be there? Did that piece of leather wind up loose when you removed the handle, and you converted it into a loop? If so, well done. What you have now reminds me of a snake whip or signal whip, which does not have a separate handle -- the handle and lash are a single length of braided leather, and the handle is weighted with shot. As for the difference, all I can see is that the bullwhip (too bad about the color!) has a cracker -- a length of string, usually removable, attached to the end of the thong to make noise when you "crack" the whip.

I hope you and whomever you play with enjoy the new toys. I'd be careful with the quirt at first.

Michael,
The one from Texas, quirt B is actually heavier and more wicked. I definitely got my $7 worth on that one.

As for the whip I made, that piece of leather where a Wrist strap would be was a loose piece of leather that joined the handle to the main part of the whip. It's not really large enough to be a wrist strap. I was pleasantly surprised to find that was there when I removed the wooden handle. I shortened the whip numerous times, and the main issue was securing the snapper back onto on the end of the main whip. It's a very cheaply made whip, but fun to play with. Yes, there is no cracker on the whip I modified, but I like the cracker on the other small one. Actually I like the whip I modified more than I do the one from TX, although both are fun. There is just something about a toy you've made that is more enjoyable than buying one I've discovered.

You know me...I'm always careful *ahem*

Pretty funny; I might have been cheating if I'd guessed about the quirts, but I'd also have been wrong. Hahahaha, shows how much I know.

If you shortened the far end of the whip -- the end not originally attached to a handle -- I'm very impressed that you managed reattach the thong. You must have skills.

I always take the string crackers off a whip before I play with it, and sometimes I wish I could take the thong off, though I don't. I guess, to me, the braided part is the lash and the rest is just noisemaker. However, a quirt is entirely different; there the braided part is clearly the handle and the leather thongs are the striking surface. That's what makes it so darned interesting.

I have never treated the leather on my implements, either purchased or homemade. Soaking a rattan cane is about the only maintenance I've done and I'm pretty lazy about that. What do you use? Neatsfoot oil?

It's almost impossible to guess which of the quirts was more expensive. If I absolutely had to guess, I suppose I'd guess that quirt B might be somewhat more expensive, but I can't explain why I'd guess that way. Anyway, hope all your purchases will turn out to be lots of fun for you and your playmate(s).

BTW, both of those quirts are excellent bargains in the quirt market these days. Also, I'm willing to bet quirt B turns out to hurt more, so use it with care.

C.,
Yes, those were very good bargains, I have to agree. Juju

C.,
I think Quirt B looks more expensive, but it was Quirt A that cost me more, so I can see why you would guess that. The leather on Quirt B is thicker, and it seems more wicked. I've not tried Quirt B on anyone yet, I am still treating the leather to soften it.

$20 vs $7
JuJu, I have no experience with whips at all, so I won't even attempt to guess.
After all this time, I don't know, are you a switch or a top?
I doesn't matter I'll still read you. LOL
Love and warm hugs,
Paul.

Re: $20 vs $7
Paul,
LOL I don't know what I am either. I am mostly a top at this point, the idea of getting spanked is not something I relish. I was curious for awhile and thought that was what "rang my bell" so to speak, but I've found topping to be most enjoyable. So who knows.
Love and warm hugs,

Seeing those stock whips gave me a bad flashback. I can remember from my earliest days being stripped naked and whipped from head to toe with one of those. It was horrible and abusive. You shouldn't be promoting these.
